Day 13

What is love?

Love is an emotion, yes, but it is more than that. Sometimes love is a decision – a choice we make. It can be easy to love, but also it can be hard. Loving our family usually comes naturally, but not always. Sometimes we are called upon to love those whom we find it hard to even like. As a Christian, God calls me to love my enemies as well as my friends. This can be a daily challenge. We may love someone one minute and despise them the next. You can love someone even if you do not like what they are doing or who they have become. This is where the choice comes in. We can turn our back on that person, or we can choose to love them despite the hurt they are causing or the life they are leading. It is not easy, but nothing worth doing, ever is!

With love comes responsibilities. Love is often not enough! It usually calls on us to sacrifice something – whether this is our time, our money, our energy, our freedom or something else. Can you relate this to family/friends/people at work maybe? Love requires us to give something of ourselves. It is exhausting, challenging, exhilarating, time consuming, it can often be an effort but it is SO worth it!

Do you choose to love only those you find it easy to love or can you find it in your heart to love those who test that love – either intentionally or unintentionally?

How can you demonstrate love for someone today?
